Contains phenolic glycosides (~21%) such as arbutin (5–17%), methylarbutin (<4%) and hydroquinone (<0.3%). Also contains tannins (10–20%) composed of gallotannins (1,2,3,4,6-pentagalloylglucose) and ellagitannins (corilagin). Up to 2% flavonoids such as quercetin, myricetin, and their glycosides. It also contains triterpenes (0.4–0.8%) consisting of ursolic acid, uvaol, α-amyrin, β-amyrin, and lupeol. Another important group of constituents are phenolic acids (~0.25%) such as gallic acid and syringic acid.
Used as a urinary disinfectant to relieve symptoms of mild, recurrent infections of the lower urinary tract, such as burning sensation when urinating and/or frequent urination in women. Not recommended for men. Should not be used longer than one week. May cause discoloration of urine.
The drug consists of whole or cut dried leaves, which are stiff, leathery, and obovate. The leaf margin is smooth and slightly turned under.
